A few years ago I invited a bunch of my friends to a bar to celebrate my birthday. Somewhat unknown to me at the time, a few of my friends weren’t exactly friends with each other. While nothing too terribly bad happened, I felt like I was in a position of awkward conflict mediator. Since then I basically vowed to not do anything for birthday except with my closest friends. That has been going well, for the most part.
On Tuesday I went downtown and joined the throngs of people gathered to cheer on the Broncos as they rolled down the street with the Vince Lombardi trophy. There’s a very delightful feeling in the air when your local team wins the Super Bowl. Despite the massive crowd, everybody was rather cordial with each other. Being united in orange works well for this town. I love and hate that it takes something as stupid as a team winning a game to make us better people. Not that I needed it, but it’s another reason to root for the Broncos. But now it’s the off-season so we’re back to using Fridays as our reason to celebrate and treat each other better.
With Deadpool being released this weekend, and because I just heard Stan Lee will be at Denver Comic Con, I wanted to do a whole week dedicated to one of my favorite things: super heroes. From comics, to toys, to the big screen this week The Unheard is all about clobbering time! So up, up, and away!
DC Comics Sausage Fest ’16
My friend, Stephen, posted the above picture (which is a shirt I’ve seen for sale at Target) along with a comment pointing out how lame ass Aqua Man is on this shirt, yet Wonder Woman is absent. To expand this further, there are a bunch of dudes on here I couldn’t name, granted my knowledge of the DC universe is far less than my Marvel knowledge, and not a single female hero. It’s sad and unfortunately all too common place in the world of comics, as well as many other areas, but this comics week.

I’d get stuck sitting behind the Hulk
When I was a kid there were only a few movies featuring legit comic book heroes. And those were almost exclusively Superman and Batman. But since the year 2000, the world of comics has been mined for movie fodder like Wakanda has been for vibranium. I’ve attempted to see them all, and I almost have. But I decided to rank them, because I like making lists. This list is by no means complete, as I’ve decided to just stick to the Marvel and DC characters, so no Spawn, Kick Ass, or Blankman. Also, this is entirely based on my personal preference, so some terrible movies may be higher than they deserve, but for a reason and I’ll explain why they have a soft spot in my heart.

There’s this awful Zach Braff movie called The Last Kiss. At one point Braff’s character wants to apologize to the women he wronged but she’s having none of it. So he takes up residence on her front porch for like 24 hours until she will talk to him. Aside from that being annoying, sociopathic, and borderline criminal; the thing that was bothering me the most was what he was doing about restroom breaks. As I’ve gotten older I realize that I have started letting real world concerns like this invade the things I use for escapism. And since I most often escape into the world of comics I have a ton of these thoughts about super heroes, mainly the X-Men. So it’s time form a comic books edition of random musings.

This was the first comic I ever owned.
When I was younger, I participated in a Young Writers’ Conference. I don’t remember too much about it, I don’t even recall what I wrote. But I continued to take creative writing classes throughout school, even in college. You would never know it from what I have published here, but I actually enjoy writing fiction. I just started to get back into it. This interest in story was fostered by the stories found in comics, often stretching across several issues.
It’s sportsball championship game weekend. I honestly don’t know what words I’m allowed to use without incurring the wrath of the country-wide sportsball association (CWSA). The match features my hometown team, the Mile High City Donkeys, and I always like watching sports more when I’m rooting for a team rather than just rooting against one. Last year I wasn’t so much hoping the Pacific Northwest Oceanbirds won, but rather the Boston Nationalists lost. But there’s still some time until the game, so you can either have fun with synonyms like me, or you can enjoy some of the fun the internet has to offer. Think of these links as the extra point to the touch down that is the weekend. I know I ran out of synonyms there. I’ll work on it.
This is my uncle Russell Klatt. I never got to know him real well. After graduating college he moved around a bunch doing awesome things. I know at one point when I was a kid he was working with a wildlife group to study and protect an endangered owl species. He used to send photos to my mom. They were really cool.
Today is Groundhog Day, and Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. Or he didn’t see it. I’m actually writing this before Phil was put to work, and I don’t have same the prognostication abilities as rodents. Normally I wouldn’t give two thoughts about this “holiday,” let alone a few hundred written words, but something from those two thoughts I wasn’t giving piqued my interest.
This past October I took a trip to Toronto to visit the Hockey Hall of Fame. I would be lying if I didn’t have many thoughts about moving there, and attempting to work at the HOF. It’s a big city, which I love. It’s Canada, which is awesome. And you know, hockey. The guy who watches the Stanley Cup had that job for like 14 years, so maybe it’s a lot harder to get a job with the HOF than I’m anticipating. Also, there’s all the issues of work visas and green cards and whatever for a Yankee like me to work and live up north. So it was just a fleeting dream.
