Ocean Man

I once listened to an interview with Loren Bouchard, creator of “Bob’s Burgers” and like half a dozen other cartoons that feature H. Jon Benjamin. Loren told a story about working with Jon and how he’ll hold the writers to a high standard. Jon will question and argue with the writers if he feels there is a line the character wouldn’t say. If he felt it didn’t fit the character or if the line was just completely unnecessary to the scene. Even going so far as adding, “Why would I say that,” to the recording if he was still forced to record a line he didn’t fully agree with. I bring this up because I found myself using the phrase, “Why would I say that,” often while watching the new DCEU movie “Aquaman.” Continue reading “Ocean Man”

Bad Art and Weirdo Ideas

Normally a hot bed of bustling activity, the 16^th street mall is deserted, quiet, and calm. It’s Sunday morning and only few shops are open, mostly the ones that serve coffee. Walking this calm mall, with the sun peeking between the buildings, has become a welcomed part of my Denver Comic Con experience. I even left for the con early this year in order to experience this longer.

As I slowly made my way toward the convention center, I thought about the past couple of days. Comic Con always makes me happy, and because I can’t just accept happiness, I had to try to figure out why this was. What is so great about Comic Con that it keeps me coming back?

X Gonna Give It To Ya

I opened every article last week stating how excited I was for Deadpool. Well I went and saw it and I was not disappointed. It lived up to all of its hype and awesome marketing. Initial thoughts put it at number 6 on my super hero movie list. Better than The Avengers but not quite as good as Guardians of the Galaxy. This may change when I get the chance to watch Deadpool more. But Guardians is just delightful.

Deadpool made more than double what was predicted, as such it is getting a ton of press, mostly predicting what that large box office means for super hero movies. Obviously I feel the need to add my two cents.

Run The World

With Deadpool being released this weekend, and because I just heard Stan Lee will be at Denver Comic Con, I wanted to do a whole week dedicated to one of my favorite things: super heroes. From comics, to toys, to the big screen this week The Unheard is all about clobbering time! So up, up, and away!

My friend, Stephen, posted the above picture (which is a shirt I’ve seen for sale at Target) along with a comment pointing out how lame ass Aqua Man is on this shirt, yet Wonder Woman is absent. To expand this further, there are a bunch of dudes on here I couldn’t name, granted my knowledge of the DC universe is far less than my Marvel knowledge, and not a single female hero. It’s sad and unfortunately all too common place in the world of comics, as well as many other areas, but this comics week.

When I was a kid there were only a few movies featuring legit comic book heroes. And those were almost exclusively Superman and Batman. But since the year 2000, the world of comics has been mined for movie fodder like Wakanda has been for vibranium. I’ve attempted to see them all, and I almost have. But I decided to rank them, because I like making lists. This list is by no means complete, as I’ve decided to just stick to the Marvel and DC characters, so no Spawn, Kick Ass, or Blankman. Also, this is entirely based on my personal preference, so some terrible movies may be higher than they deserve, but for a reason and I’ll explain why they have a soft spot in my heart.

What’s Going On?

Gambit_(X-Men)

There’s this awful Zach Braff movie called The Last Kiss. At one point Braff’s character wants to apologize to the women he wronged but she’s having none of it. So he takes up residence on her front porch for like 24 hours until she will talk to him. Aside from that being annoying, sociopathic, and borderline criminal; the thing that was bothering me the most was what he was doing about restroom breaks. As I’ve gotten older I realize that I have started letting real world concerns like this invade the things I use for escapism. And since I most often escape into the world of comics I have a ton of these thoughts about super heroes, mainly the X-Men. So it’s time form a comic books edition of random musings.

Responsibility

When I was younger, I participated in a Young Writers’ Conference. I don’t remember too much about it, I don’t even recall what I wrote. But I continued to take creative writing classes throughout school, even in college. You would never know it from what I have published here, but I actually enjoy writing fiction. I just started to get back into it. This interest in story was fostered by the stories found in comics, often stretching across several issues.
